We held the first String Break in 2006 to help out our dear friend, musician Kirk Rundstrom. After a diagnosis of esophageal cancer, he required substantial help with medical expenses and had no health insurance. That first String Break ended up being on a rainy and dreary day. But, despite the weather, we were dedicated to our friend’s cause. With help from family, friends, and fans, String Break raised more than $10,000 for Kirk.
Following Kirk’s death on February 22, 2007, String Break was still dedicated. The young family that was left behind continued to struggle to pay for medical expenses. Our benefit once again raised substantial funds … nearly $10,000. The annual String Break Kirk Rundstrom Memorial Music Festival is scheduled for the first Saturday in May. Year after year, with help from family and friends, String Break hopes to be as successful as in past years.
Proceeds from past benefits have benefited the following charities: Rundstrom, Tureen, Bennett Cancer Fund, Inc., Kirby’s Steve Schroeder Memorial Scholarship to WSU, Rundstrom Girls’ Trust Fund, American Cancer Society – Relay for Life. Auctions and raffles are held throughout the event, and merch and concession stands offer goods. These items have been invaluable in past years by helping increase income as well as keeping everyone entertained between bands. Ten bands donate their time to entertain you for the cost of a gate ticket. All proceeds are distributed to charities, with no personal gain to volunteers or partners of String Break.
String Break happens on a small farm just east of Newton, Kansas. Rough camping is allowed overnight at no extra cost. No pets are allowed.
